Waxing Aftercare 101: How to Take Care of Your Skin After a Wax

You just got waxed. You feel smooth, a little victorious, and maybe slightly red. Now what?

What you do in the first 24–48 hours after a wax makes a huge difference — especially if you have sensitive skin. At Bush & Brow Wax Studio in Denver, we use hard, vegan, hypoallergenic wax specifically chosen to be gentler on skin, but even the best wax needs a little backup from you post-appointment.

Here’s your complete waxing aftercare guide — the same tips our estheticians share with every client.

The First 24 Hours: What to Avoid

What You Should Do: The Good Stuff

Aftercare isn’t just about what to avoid — it’s about actively helping your skin recover and stay smooth longer.

Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer or body oil. After 24 hours, hydrating the skin helps reduce redness and keeps ingrown hairs at bay. Fragrance-free is key — heavily scented lotions can irritate freshly waxed skin.

Wear loose, natural fabrics. Cotton is your friend right after a wax. Give waxed areas room to breathe for the rest of the day.

Start exfoliating after 48 hours. Once the initial sensitivity passes, gentle exfoliation 2–3 times a week keeps dead skin from trapping hairs and causing ingrown hairs. A dry brush or sugar scrub works great.

Keep the area clean and dry. Especially for Brazilian and bikini waxes, clean and dry is the goal for that first day.

Tips for Sensitive Skin

Got reactive skin? You’re not alone, and waxing is absolutely still an option for you. Here’s how to make it work:

Tell your esthetician before you start. At Bush & Brow, we always ask about your skincare routine, medications, and any sensitivities before we pick up a wax strip. The more we know, the better we can tailor the service.

Skip retinoids and AHAs for a week beforehand. These thin the skin and make waxing more uncomfortable and more likely to cause lifting or irritation.

Soothe with aloe vera. Pure aloe is naturally anti-inflammatory and fragrance-free. It’s ideal for calming redness right after a wax.

Avoid touching the area. Hands transfer bacteria. The cleaner you keep freshly waxed skin, the less likely you are to break out.

Why does this matter? We use hard vegan wax at Bush & Brow specifically because it adheres to hair — not skin. It’s the gentler choice for sensitive skin types, and it hurts less than soft wax. But even the best wax paired with bad aftercare can lead to irritation. Good aftercare is what keeps your skin looking its best.

How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs Between Appointments

Ingrown hairs are the most common waxing complaint — and almost all of them are preventable with the right routine.

Exfoliate regularly. Starting 48 hours after your wax, make gentle exfoliation part of your routine 2–3 times a week. This sloughs off dead skin cells that can trap hairs as they grow back.

Moisturize daily. Hydrated skin allows hair to break through the surface easily. Dry skin is ingrown hair territory.

Don’t shave between appointments. Waxing results last longer and are more comfortable when you come in consistently every 3–6 weeks. Shaving between sessions disrupts the hair growth cycle and makes your next wax more painful.

Come in on a consistent schedule. The more regular your appointments, the finer and sparser your hair grows back, and the less likely you are to get ingrowns.

When Should You Come Back?

Most people do best on a 3–6 week schedule, depending on how fast their hair grows and which area we’re waxing. Here’s a rough guide:

Brazilian and bikini waxing: every 3–5 weeks

Legs and body waxing: every 4–6 weeks

Brow waxing: every 3–4 weeks

Upper lip and facial waxing: every 2–4 weeks

The sweet spot is coming in just before the hair gets long enough to bother you. Over time, your skin adjusts, the hair grows back finer, and the whole process gets easier.

No hot showers or baths. Warm water is fine, hot water inflames freshly waxed skin. Skip the steam room too.

No gym or heavy sweating. Sweat + open follicles = irritation. Give it a day.

No tight clothing on waxed areas. Friction causes bumps. Loose, breathable fabrics only.

No sun or tanning. Freshly waxed skin burns faster and is prone to hyperpigmentation if exposed right away.

No exfoliating products. AHAs, BHAs, retinols, scrubs — all off-limits for at least 48 hours.

No sex (for Brazilian clients). For the first 24 hours after a Brazilian or bikini wax, give the area a break.
